Piper                                                                                                1999

One of my earliest performance pieces, inspired by artist Adrian Piper, took place at San Francisco State University’s Fine Arts Building.  With a food stamp in mouth and my hand extended outwards in a handshake gesture, I walk toward a door that has a printed sign on it with the question “Is it Race or Class?” I walk straight into the door, only to bounce off the glass entrance of the University building.   I return to my position and repeat the gesture over and over.
